You can walk. You can run. You can crawl. The inaugural 5k Granny Run is ready to go Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m. from the Sechelt Seniors' Activity Centre.

Entries are accepted from male, female, young or old. The proceeds from this event will go towards improving the Seniors' Centre sound system and acquiring a brand new projection screen system to encourage new programs and rentals.

For the past 14 years, the Seniors' Centre has operated without the need for fundraising. But with over 35 activities per month and an active membership of over 1,000, there is a need to upgrade the Centre and its equipment. In reality, the Centre has become the community centre of Sechelt, where every imaginable recreation and social activity takes place. It is run totally by volunteers. Anyone in the community can become an active member, and any group can rent the facilities.

This year, the centre needs help and it is hoped that funds raised from this walk will go a long ways to providing that help. The run is certainly not on the scale of the Sun Run or even the highly successful April Fools Run. It is an easy 5km route starting at the Seniors' Centre that anyone can try.

If walking or running is not your thing, you can still help out. There are a number of areas where volunteers are needed on the day of the race. Volunteers can sign up at the centre, or phone 604-885-8910 and leave a message.During the race, water and first aid stations will be set up near Pharmasave and the Lighthouse Pub. It is hoped that 80 entries will be received this year. Entry forms are available at the Seniors' Centre.

After the walk/run, there will be a brunch, event announcements and entertainment by the musical group Fiona Dhu until about 1 p.m. The brunch is restricted to run entrants, volunteers and Centre members.

Other fundraisers planned for the Seniors' Centre are a silent auction in June and a joint venture with C-VUE radio on May 27. This event is a unique approach in providing a fundraiser by two organizations working together. Saturday Night Live is a dance, broadcast live on C-VUE radio. There will be live entertainment, lots of door prizes, finger foods, liquid refreshments and foot-stomping dance music provided by C-VUE. Tickets are reasonable, available at the Seniors' Centre and several other outlets. This event is open to anyone over 19 years.
