This year's Young People's Art Show is on display at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.
This annual event highlights artwork from local schools. Art work from the elementary schools will be on display from April 23 to May 11 while the high schools will be exhibiting their work from May 14 to June 1.
All Sunshine Coast schools have been invited to participate. The only stipulation is that the work submitted must have been created while in a school based art program.
The Arts Centre is at 5714 Medusa in Sechelt and is open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. See scartscouncil.com or call 604-885-5412 for more details.
Crissinger plays
Former Gibsons resident Mark Crissinger returns for this Saturday's matinee performance at the Persephone Brewery tasting room (Stewart Road, Gibsons) from 2 to 5 p.m.
Crissinger performs more than 100 showsa year on Vancouver Island and beyond.He has been playing in pubs and clubs,festivals and fairs since 1987 and continuesto tour throughout Canada. His one-man show combinesstellar acoustic guitar playing witha few harmonica solos and soulful vocals.
He performs music from his original recordings plus some folk-rock, blues and pub favourites.A few road stories and many years of showmanship will make for a fun, upbeat afternoon of music.
Playback
Playback performs classic rock hits from the 1960s and 1970s at the Gibsons Legion 109 on Saturday, April 19 from 8 p.m. to midnight. Dance your socks off. No minors. Admission is $5 members, $10 guests.
Circle performs
The Sunshine Coast Community Song Circle meets almost every week to sing together under the direction of Janet Oxley and Vicki Beeman. Their singing is for fun, but recently they have rehearsed a theme song especially for a performance at the Neil Falkner Memorial fundraiser coming this Saturday, April 19 at the Roberts Creek Hall. Doors open for the evening event at 7:30 p.m. and there's much music and entertainment on offer. James & Jamesy (of 2 for Tea fame) are featured. E-mail [email protected] for more information.
FOPA
Week three of the Festival of the Performing Arts begins on April 22 at 9:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. with the percussion, woodwinds, and brass category. School bands are at the Chatelech Secondary School Theatre on Tuesday, and solos and ensembles are at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons on April 23 at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Electronic/acoustic, folk instrumental and dance categories follow during the week. The public is welcome to attend any of these events. Admission is by donation. For the full schedule and venues see www.coastfestival.com.
Green Film series
On Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22 get on board the veggie bus and follow snowboarders and surfers as they travel throughout B.C. and Alberta on a mission to understand Canadian resource extraction projects.
This film screening at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse follows Beyond Boarding team members as they travel together to showcase the destructive nature of the various industrial projects that are currently facing communities.

Club fundraiser
Club Night for the 19-plus (licensed) gets underway with lights, sound and music at the Gibsons Public Market on Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m. From 8 p.m. to midnight see DJs Chaotic and Kontroller. You can help the Gibsons Elementary School PAC raise funds by bidding on their silent auction. Tickets are $10, available at Chemistry, Loumidees and at the door.
Coffeehouse
On Friday, April 25 the Coast Cultural Alliance presents Artesia Coffeehouse: Dare to be Heard. Celebrate Poetry Month with many local spoken word authors.It's at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. 101 Art
For April and May, 101 is displaying artwork by Landyn Funk. While he has enjoyed creating images on paper and canvas most of his life, the artist took up painting seriously about four years ago and has since produced a significant number of works. This show ranges from abstract to representative covering a variety of subjects and styles, and features some sculptural canvasses as well. Concert band
The Suncoast Concert Band with director Janice Brunson will perform on Saturday, April 26 at the Sechelt Indian Band Hall.
The concert is titled Literary Notes and features music written about the stories we all know and love from various aspects of literature. Tickets are $15.
