Rudy Wiebe is returning to the Sunshine Coast for a reading on March 12.
Wiebe is a favourite of Coast audiences as well as one of Canada's most distinguished writers. His many publications, including novels, short stories, drama and creative non-fiction, have won major awards including the Governor General's Award for Fiction for The Temptations of Big Bear in 1973 and for A Discovery of Strangers in 1994.
He is also an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Wiebe has been one of the major builders of western Canadian literature, not only as a writer but also as a leader in writers' organizations, a public figure and a teacher and mentor to a generation of younger writers. His latest novel, Sweeter Than All the World, is an historical story of the Mennonite people. It has been described as "a deeply redemptive novel about family love and its power."
Wiebe has since published a picture book about Lethbridge and a book of children's stories, so his reading may contain some surprises.
Wiebe will be in Sechelt at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 12, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre.
Admission is free, courtesy of Canada Council.
