For the past 30 years, members of the Life Drawing Group have been gathering Tuesdays at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre to draw the human form. The work in Life at 30 is from the current generation of artists drawing with the group over the past year; some are professional artists with many decades of experience and others are beginning artists. The unique quality of the work in this exhibit is because once the model breaks his or her pose, no further work is done on any of the drawings. As a result they have a spontaneity and immediacy not ordinarily seen in exhibitions of art where the usual criteria include finish, polish, and tidy coherence.
The drawings are unframed and literally “paper” the walls. The result is a vibrant exhibition and an impressive celebration of the magnitude and diversity of humanity. The exhibition runs until Nov. 18 at the Doris Crowston Gallery in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, corner of Trail and Medusa in Sechelt. The opening night reception is on Wednesday, Nov. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. For more, see www.sunshinecoastartscouncil.com or call 604-885-5412.

Library art show
Adorning the walls of the Sechelt Public Library from now until January are paintings by local artist Sheila Page and prints by Kathryn Neun.
Page, a retired elementary school teacher, has spent the last 10 years taking a number of art classes and workshops at Emily Carr University of Art & Design, Capilano University, and the Gibsons School of the Arts. Her paintings are from a series she calls A Closer Look – works that explore the beach scenes familiar to anyone living on the Coast.
Complementing Page’s paintings are a series of ethereal prints by Neun, who completed her BFA at York University.
Most of Neun’s prints are collagraphs – a collaging of a variety of materials directly onto the printing plate. The results are somewhat haunting, softly textured images that contain hints of nature and animals.
Artwork can be viewed during Library hours and is available for purchase directly from the artists. Applications to have your artwork on view are accepted year-round; see the application form at Sechelt.ca or contact Siobhan Smith, arts coordinator, at: [email protected] or 604-989-0804.
