Katherine Hume is the new music directorate St. Hilda's.

The rector and the wardens of St. Hilda’s Anglican Church are delighted to announce the appointment of Katherine Hume as the new music director, and the launch of a new recital series Music Arising.

“We are excited to welcome Katherine as our new music director to build on the tradition of celebrating fine music at St. Hilda’s over the past 80 years on the Sunshine Coast,” said Rev. Clarence Li, Rector of St. Hilda’s.

Hume joins St. Hilda’s with a decorated career as a pianist, a church organist and a music educator. She studied and trained at McGill University in Montreal and Trinity College of Music in England and has held the position of church organist at Ascension Lutheran Church and St. Margaret of Scotland Anglican Church in Montreal, and at the Chapelle St-Pierre in Switzerland. As a collaborative pianist, her performance with French horn player Barbara Hill was featured on CBC Radio 2’s Westcoast Performance. She has had extensive experience in church and community choirs, having previously been a member of Christ Church Cathedral Singers, Women’s Plainsong Choir, McGill Chamber Singers, and L’Ensemble Vocale de l’Orchestre Symphonique in Montreal.

Hume is excited to launch Music Arising, a new recital series of St. Hilda’s that will debut this month on Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. with the Jazz Group of Seven, who will perform jazz standards, bop, Latin and gospel music in novel arrangements, many of them written by leader John Frederickson. Admission is by donation.

St. Hilda’s is excited to offer affordable live music in eclectic genres such as jazz, classical, solo piano and organ, voice, folk and world music by accomplished local and regional artists. The commitment to music performance is evident at St. Hilda’s and showcases their beautiful acoustics and instruments: a Casavant pipe organ, the only instrument of its kind on the Sunshine Coast, and a Yamaha grand piano.

“We hope to share this music with new audiences and create a dynamic space for musical performance within our community,” Hume said.
