An exhibition of acrylics by Jeff Wilson, 60 Degrees North: Shetland, opens on Feb. 11 at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery and runs through March 6 with an opening reception on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. In parallel, Arrival, an exhibition of photographs by Nick Westover, is in the Eve Smart Gallery. Wilson writes: “This series of paintings is based on my visual art residency completed in March 2014 at The Booth in Scalloway, Shetland Islands. The subject matter of these works includes animals, landscapes, boats and signage that typify this northern community that has striking similarity to Canada’s own life and landscape north of sixty.” He will give a talk on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m.
Arrival by Nick Westover features photographic portraits of refugees, newly settled in Canada, within the context of their new environments and within the wider context of the political constraints and boundaries in which they exist. For further information, phone Michael Aze at 604-886-0531.

Les Liaisons
Capilano University’s Theatre Department and Exit 22 Productions proudly present the infamous classic Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Sophia Ballantyne, an acting student who grew up on the Sunshine Coast, has a lead role in this seductive tale. Her character is not nice, Ballantyne says – the character is the puppeteer of the whole show who uses sex and love to manipulate. At age 22, Ballantyne has had to stretch her life experiences to fill the role: “It’s a large task to get myself in her mindset, but I’m grateful for the challenge.” Ballantyne’s dad, Timothy Webber, better known for his role as Cece Cooper in CBC’s Arctic Air, has had a long career in the business and has been a great support to her. Directed by Gillian Barber and performed by theatre students, Les Liaisons Dangereuses opens Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. at Capilano University, North Vancouver campus and runs to Feb. 13. Tickets are at tickets.capilanou.ca or call 604-990-7810.
