The Outrageous Women showed themselves to be creative women with a flair for performing at the International Women’s Day (IWD) event on March 8. Women and some men crowded the Gumboot Café on IWD in an event organized by Caitlin Hicks, one of the speakers.

Linda Nardelli kicked off with a poem and she was followed by Janice Williams whose confidence in reading her work aloud has grown greatly. She read a piece about that dreamy guy she met at AA, but who is he really? There might not be a second date. Tit for Tat, another piece from Williams, was both funny and sad.

Hicks related some stories she had gathered from old timers on the Coast. One of them was from the late Pixie Daly about the pig man who sold pork in Pender Harbour and the good times they had at dances there, even when fights broke out. But Hicks’ best story had been collected from Happy Cat Haven’s founder Violet Winegarden’s memories of her grandmother.

Winegarden was an honoured guest at the evening and she spoke to remind the audience that caring for one another also extends to caring for the animals.

Danika Dinsmore was an engaging spoken word entertainer, especially when she described the “bad ass biker bitch for Buddha.” She was colourful, loud and the audience loved her. Her poem Divided, an American/Canadian dual citizenship lament/rant/ vow of resistance, was powerful.

The four performers also gave a touching tribute to many strong and famous women throughout the years.
