The Sunshine Coast Arts Council presents artist Jennifer Drysdale’s new technicolour paintings in a series entitled This Earth, running May 2 to 27.
The series tells stories of people and places afar though close to home, about planet Earth and its fragile environment. Experimenting with oil and cold wax, a medium new to her, Drysdale explores her impressions of the world around her, envisioning an alternate view of the planet Earth. Rather than zooming in on her subject matter as she has done in past work, Drysdale is gazing up towards the open sky or through outer space. She conjures up what fictional ancestors may have looked like and paints out their lives on this earth, our home.
She describes the process of working with the soft wax surface as one “of mystery, discovery and unexpected results, fueling the inspiration for my next piece. Fluorescent and high key colours underline the anxiety I feel for possibilities of disaster, while simultaneously delivering unexpected delight and a hopeful forecast.”
Born and raised in Montreal, Drysdale is now a resident of Gibsons sharing her skill and love of painting at various art classes on the Coast.
The opening reception for her exhibition will be on Sunday, May 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. On Sunday, May 13, at 1:30 p.m., she will give a demonstration of her use of hot wax in her painting. Join us at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, 5714 Medusa, at the corner of Trail in Sechelt.
