Myths and Sticks

Art Beat

Personal Myths, an exhibition by Duncan Chrystal, and In the Sticks, an exhibition by Larry Popowich, opens with a reception on Saturday, May 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Gibsons Public Art Gallery.

Chrystal writes: “I have always wanted to create images that tell stories. I discovered my primary creative voice through my work on a series of creations that some early reviewers called Soul Paintings. As I painted, faces and figures emerged and were then freed. The results have been described as ethereal, otherworldly and haunting.” Chrystal will be at the Gallery to meet and greet visitors on two Saturdays, May 13 and 20, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Popowich writes: “I started by wrapping and binding the detritus of the built environment as it was found merged with the seashore. I started to feel that the dis-usables of my life, the objects and parts of objects that are not useful and not quite garbage, found a place in these armatures of accumulation.”

Show runs May 4 to 28 and the gallery is open Thursday to Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For further information, phone Michael Aze at 604-886-0531.

Two artists

Catch S.C. Arts Council’s new exhibition by Colin Righton, Point of View, and Carole Millar, Transfigured Shape, at the Doris Crowston Gallery in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, opening May 10 and running to June 4. Righton’s “most recent paintings, predominantly colourful and dynamic acrylics, reflect inner as well as outer travels.” Point of View embraces the tension between order and chaos and the dynamic place where these powers engage. Millar works in oils creating abstract and often representational work. Her oils start from an emotional intent that reveals its own story as her painting progresses.

The opening reception is being held Saturday, May 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. On Saturday, May 20 at 1 p.m., there will be an opportunity to meet the artists at the Doris Crowston Gallery. For more, see www.sunshinecoastartscouncil.com
