Born and raised on the Coast, poet and novelist Joe Denham returns to read and talk about his work. His poetry has been widely acclaimed; in 2016 his book Regeneration Machine won the Canadian Authors Association Award and was also a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Poetry.
One reviewer has described Joe’s poems as odysseys. Each book is like a quest, a self-exploration prompted in Regeneration Machine by the suicide of a friend, and in Landfall by existential doubt about the survival of our planet, a doubt which is expressed in the first lines of the poem.
The poetry is eloquent, almost oratorical, and often angry. It is also carefully crafted, rhythmic, with internal rhyme and alliteration, wonderful to listen to. Micheline Mayor writes: “Denham summons poetry to its highest calling as an elegant medium for profound sentiment.”
Joe Denham is presenting his work at the Arts Centre in Sechelt on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. This is the second in the 2019 reading series offered by the Sunshine Coast Arts Council and sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts.
