A piece by Alanna Wood, at the Arts Centre until July 22.

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council presents Abstracts Exposed and Elemental Details, June 27 to July 22 at the Doris Crowston Gallery. The exhibition features the work of Katherine Johnston (Abstracts Exposed) and Alanna Wood (Elemental Details).

Johnston’s Abstracts Exposed represents her work over the last five years. During this time her painting has been dedicated to abstracts; a sharp turn from her former representational subjects. Johnston appreciates the freedom of abstraction, the adventure of discovery providing new inspiration.

“Abstraction for me then becomes a journey into the unknown of spontaneity, an exciting process with a final result never prearranged.”

Colour and texture, both of which have been central to her previous work, are carried forward to abstraction, with colour altered to suit her exploration. In this exhibition she favours bright colours with lots of gestural brushstrokes.

“My hope is that viewers will be able to let their own imaginings take flight on seeing these paintings.”

A multi-media artist, Wood is constantly exploring different visual techniques to express her ideas. Her repertoire includes: photography, digital image manipulation, collage and fibre arts.

In her own words, “The idea will determine the medium used to depict it.”

Much of the work in this exhibition is collaged.

“The piecing together of fractured parts and deconstructing the subject matter into a reassembled image, gives my imagination an extended latitude for creating cohesive and unique images.”

Reoccurring themes in this exhibit include map images inspired by the 360-degree view of the prairie landscape of her childhood and the circle and the square – both symbols she associates with strength and balance.

The opening reception will be held Saturday, June 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. and a Meet the Artist talk is set for Sunday, July 8 at 1:30 p.m. Both events will be held in the Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, at the corner of Trail and Medusa in Sechelt.
