Elegant evening fundraiser

From Celtic harps to gospel choirs, audiences have enjoyed all types of music at St John's United Church in Davis Bay over the past 15 years.

From Celtic harps to gospel choirs, audiences have enjoyed all types of music at St John's United Church in Davis Bay over the past 15 years. The church has ample seating for a crowd and its stained glass windows offer a meditative complement to the music. But the church has a problem. It was diagnosed with serious water damage similar to Vancouver's leaky condo situation and it requires repairs in the range of $620,000.The small congregation of about 125 families has responded admirably to the need and they have managed, over time, to raise approximately $320,000 through direct donations and various fund raising efforts. Now, it's time for another major fundraising launch called An Elegant Evening at Stonehaven to take place on Saturday, April 1, at 7 p.m. in an attractive waterfront home in Halfmoon Bay owned by event co-ordinator Wendy Craig. The evening's entertainment includes catered appetizers and music by jazz musician and choir leader Jo Hatherill. His Tuesday evening chamber music group will play from 7 to 9 p.m., and he and a friend will play jazz for the remainder of the evening. The generously donated silent auction items include many winners. Guests can bid on original artwork from local artists including Jane Ford and Yzabelle Delisle Milton, quilted wall hangings from the church's own quilters and other items such as candles, pottery and crystal goblets.Probably one of the hottest items is the rare opportunity to meet the cast of Stargate while on set in Vancouver - a $1,000 value. The winning bidder and one guest will be entitled to a day onthe set of the show to see what happens behind the scenes, have lunch on the lot with the crew and visitthe numerous departments. They will also watch the actors do their scenes for a forthcoming episode and will be personally introduced to the cast.If that's not your style, you can bid on a gourmet dinner for six, get organic eggs delivered to your door or shop for a new wardrobe with gift certificates. Sports fans can pick up a signed NFL football or hockey jersey. You can also enjoy a cruise for six in Princess Louisa Inlet, spend the night in Whistler or check into some local B and Bs for a getaway. Other items include a used canoe, books, voice lessons, even an orchid.Tickets for An Elegant Evening at Stonehaven are $50 per person, available at Talewind Books in Sechelt or by calling Wendy Craig at 604-885-3049.
