The Gibsons and Vancouver filmed Charlie St. Cloud, starring Zac Efron, Kim Basinger, Amanda Crew and Ray Liotta, opens today (Friday) on the Sunshine Coast and in various theatres in the Lower Mainland.
Showings will be at both the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt and the Gibsons Cinema.
Charlie St. Cloud is a young man overcome by grief at the death of his younger brother, so much so that he takes a job as caretaker of the cemetery in which his brother is buried. Charlie has a lasting bond with his brother, though, as he can see him. Charlie meets up with his brother (Sam) each night to play catch and talk. Then, a girl comes into Charlie's life and he must choose between keeping a promise he made to Sam, or going after the girl he loves.
Sketchcrawl
Artist Jan Poynter would like to encourage artists to join in a local sketchcrawl. Bring your sketchbook, moleskin, pen, pencil, or brushpen and watercolors and meet in Lower Gibsons on Saturday at 11 a.m. across from Molly's Reach next to the tourist info kiosk. "We just wander and draw, sit, drink coffee, chat and draw some more," said Poynter. "People, buskers, buildings, boats, dogs, seagullswhatever you like. After the day's wandering, you can post your drawings to the on-line forum at sketchcrawl.com with fellow 'crawlers' from all over the world."

Deer Crossing
Deer Crossing, the art farm near Langdale, will host Synchronicity, a festival Aug. 7 to 8.
They promise a journey through the woods you'll never forget and three shows a day to include masks and music, puppetry and poetry, stories and sculpture. The art farm has been holding events for the past two years that incorporate art and nature. It's located at 1747 Storvold Road near Langdale. Get directions from www.deercrossingtheartfarm.org. Gambier talks
The last event in a Gambier Island Ideas series is Saturday, Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. when Robert Keziere, photographer, presents A Pox on Pixels, Some Found and Built Photographs: Hooray for Film and a Brief Look at Personal Work and Professional Pictures About Art, 1980 to 2010. Chamber Music
The sixth annual Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival runs Aug. 20 to 22 in Madeira Park. Although that's a few weeks away, tickets for the five-concert program have been selling well and it's best to order yours without delay.
