Opening at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt on March 10 is a two-artist exhibition.
Joanne Marks of Sechelt will exhibit her photographic works, and Halfmoon Bay resident Belinda Grames will display her digital images.
Marks' photographs are inspired by nature and capture the feeling of nature in her landscapes, abstract studies and dreamlike reflections. The images she created in her camera with multiple exposures and in the darkroom with transparency montages add to her broad repertoire some impressionistic images. She was born in Quebec, lived in Ontario for many years and has enhanced her visual experience by travelling throughout Canada. Photography has encouraged her to live in the moment and has developed her art of seeing. Her work has been recognized in regional, national and international photographic competitions. Her images have been published in magazines, brochures and reference books. For this exhibition she has selected works that focus on reflections, shadows and light.
Grames has been working in the digital medium for about three years. She loves the freedom and flexibility this medium allows. She says the options available at the tip of one's fingers are limitless.
The photographs she chooses and the colours, lines and textures she works with are all picked spontaneously, resulting in images purely from the moment, led by her intuition. Visual art is an expansion of her creativity. She has been writing for 20 years and found that incorporating visual art with written art enhanced her creative expression. The digital works she exhibits in Dreaming the Dark are very painterly and quite sensual. They have a strong graphic quality, often abstract, and display a dynamic palette.
As a newer visual artist, she has accomplished a sensitive understanding of the elements of visual language.
Meet the artists at the opening reception on Wednesday, March 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. The exhibition runs from March 10 to April 4. Gallery hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.
