Author Ujjal Dosanjh.

Former B.C. premier Ujjal Dosanjh is coming to Sechelt to do a reading from his book Journey After Midnight: India, Canada, and the Road Beyond, on Saturday, May 13, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. The bestselling autobiography details his life from rural India to his journey into the upper echelons of Canadian politics.

Dosanjh was born in 1947 in Dosanjh Kalan village of Jalandhar District in Punjab. He grew up hearing stories from his grandfather about Kamagatu Maru, the gurdwara reform movement and about Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru. He emigrated to England at the age of 17, and came to Canada four years later, becoming a Vancouver lawyer, social activist and parliamentarian. He became Attorney General of British Columbia in 1995 and served as the province’s 33rd premier before entering federal politics as a Liberal MP (2004-11).

A vocal human rights advocate and an outspoken critic of violence and extremism, Dosanjh was honoured with the inaugural Wallenberg-Sugihara civil Courage Award in 2015.

The event is co-sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Reading at 8 p.m. Admission is by donation.
