The first Artesia coffeehouse of 2014 will be held at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt, tonight, Friday, Jan. 31.

Poems wanted
The Coast Symphony Orchestra is holding a poetry contest prior to its next concert, If Music Be the Food of Love.
This is an open invitation to all Coast-based poets - the CSO is looking for new poetry that will be used to introduce works during the March 1 and 2 concerts. The successful poems will be printed in the program and be read during the concert. There are four themes: temptation, courtship, danger and tragedy. You are welcome to submit in more than one category, to a maximum of four entries per person. Winners will receive two complimentary tickets to the performance of their choice.

GPAG show
In Media Res is a new show at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery (431 Marine Drive) with an opening reception this Saturday, Feb. 1 from 2 to 4.
Artists Jacqueline O Rogers and Matthew Talbot-Kelly will show their recent artwork in the gallery and John Tenbear Thompson will play music at the reception. All are welcome.
Swain opening
Artist Donna Swain's Igniting the Muse, a show of acrylic abstract paintings and more, holds its opening reception this Saturday, Feb. 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Landing Co-op Gallery, 436 Marine Drive, Gibsons.
She focuses on the spontaneous connections in which the artist's muse connects us all. Jim Taylor complements her featured paintings with his own interpretation on acoustic guitar, and Larry Musser extends inner rhythms as percussionist.
Another special guest, the youngest artist at seven years old, Rebecca Taylor, will be painting live and when you reach into your pocket to donate to the Food Bank she will give you a piece of her art as her thank you. Swain has selected a personal work, her "Coastal Skylight" collage and mixed media, to award to one lucky visitor who enters the free draw at this month's show. Draw date is Feb. 28.

Coriolanus?National Theatre Live via satellite from London will broadcast Shakespeare's searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge,Coriolanus, this Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt.

Marley birthday
The 15th annual event in celebration of Bob Marley's birthday will be at the Roberts Creek Little Legion on Saturday, Feb. 8. The birthday bash features live music from The Hoolicans, Randeesh, DJ Nils and guests. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 for members, $10 for guests with members.
Shelter fundraiser
Entertainers Berni G & Frenz are hosting an afternoon of cabaret, featuring songs from the 1940s, '50s and '60s, Cold Nights - Warm Heart, on Feb. 8 from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
The show will feature a fantastic line-up of guest performers including Joe Stanton, Ken Dalgleish, and Boyd Norman, and will be held at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre. All proceeds will be used to support the cold weather shelter, which opened in November 2013 and needs funding in order to stay open until the end of March 2014.
