Coast Art Beat: Choral evensong and consort of viols in Gibsons Nov. 20

For the first time on the Coast, voices will be accompanied by a consort of viols for the service. These six-stringed, fretted instruments were widespread during the Renaissance period but faded when their intimate sound was overshadowed by the growing violin family.

For the first time on the Coast, voices will be accompanied by a consort of viols for the service. These six-stringed, fretted instruments were widespread during the Renaissance period but faded when their intimate sound was overshadowed by the growing violin family. A resurgence of early music in the mid-20th century led to a revival of the viol, which has now reached the Sunshine Coast.

Director David Poon promises a time of contemplation and reflection, aided by the sounds of 17th-century England amongst the peace of a calming afternoon liturgy.
