Ceramics on the Edge 5 is on display at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt (corner of Trail and Medusa) from now until Aug. 4, showcasing the work of 14 Coast ceramic artistswith examples of wood-fired, gas-fired, electric-fired, saggar-fired, salt-fired and raku-fired work on display.
Buy a copy of the show catalogue when you visit as it tells more about each artist and is a good reference guide to the potters of the Coast. Catalogues are $3 and the money goes to fund future shows. Write a comment inthe guest book as this helps organizers to assess what they've done right and wrong.
Arts Centre hours are Wednesday to Saturday,10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.
Folk jazz
Chasters at Bonniebrook Lodge near Gibsons presents a weekend of live music to accompany their elegant dinners. Tonight (Friday) it's folk jazz by local musician Charlotte Wrinch. Music in the Landing
This weekend promises another sunny forecast and live outdoor music in Gibsons as Music in the Landing presents Keia Papa Kaua, a local group performing traditional Hawaiian hula in the gazebo on the wharf this Friday night from 7 to 8 p.m.
Saturday morning enjoyoriginal and cover tunes from Charlotte Wrinch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Pioneer Square, then move to the Pink House at 1:30to listen to the dynamic fiddle duo of Maya Broeke and Esme McLaughlin Brooks.
On Saturday evening, bring out your lawn chairs and picnic blankets for songs revived from the '50s, '60s and '70s as George Grafton andthe Nostalgettes present an evening ofnostalgia. This group will set up a flatbed trailer in front of the bandshell in Winegarden Park, and they are ready to rock and roll.
Sunday's music is back at the Sundial Stage with the fine guitar stylings of Brian Gauci at 11:30 a.m. followed by Mathew Lovegrove as he presents his original folk songs.
Music in the Landing will take a break the following week to enjoy Sea Cavalcade and will be back for the long weekend of Aug. 2 to 5. See more details at www.facebook.com/music.landing.
Canoe exhibit
The Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives (716 Winn Rd. in Gibsons) in partnership with Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre presents Chatwilh, the craft and culture of the Squamish canoe. The exhibition opens this Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. with a guest speaker. Admission is by donation.
Laughter Club
Laughter Club with "fun-silly-tators" Jill Conway and Trudi Dambrumenil will set you giggling every Tuesday evening in July and August from 7 to 8 p.m. at Mission Point Park in Davis Bay (on the Sunshine Coast Highway, across from the little white church at Whitaker Road).
What to expect: laughter games, parachute play, gratitude circle, silliness, acceptance and open-hearted fun. This is mostly a program for adults, but if you have an interested child, seven or older, bring them along. Pay what you can. Why laugh? Because we can and because it feels good! This is a fair weather event - if it is raining stay home and laugh.
Camp fundraiser
The Camp Band is organizing two fundraising concerts for the food banks on July 26 and 27, called Peanut Butter Jam.
The first one will be at Boomers Burger Bar in Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons on Friday, July 26, at 7 p.m. Admission at the door is by donation to the Gibsons Food Bank.
The second show will be on Saturday, July 27, on the beach near Henderson Beach at the end of Beach Avenue in Roberts Creek starting at 1 p.m. with all donations going to the Sechelt Food Bank.
