The Sunshine Coast’s two major public art galleries – which recently reopened on a limited basis after two months of COVID-19 shutdown – have new exhibitions opening this week. (Both locations are adhering to health regulations and allow only six visitors at a time.)
Gibsons Public Art Gallery’s show is Between the Layers, by the 16 members of the Sunshine Coast Surface Design Group. “The group’s members may work with paper, digitally altered images, fabric, dyes and paints, fibre and thread or mixed media. Surface design techniques may include printing, painting and dyeing, spinning and weaving, knitting, machine and hand stitching and felting.” The show runs until July 5.
Pride Month art
The Sunshine Coast Arts Council is hosting its fifth annual LGBTQ2+ art show at the Doris Crowston Gallery in Sechelt. Entitled Performing Flux, the exhibition presents works in photography, video and painting that explore issues of gender, identity, sexuality – and COVID-19.
“Capturing for a moment in time what is in a perpetual state of flux, the works have a wonderful resonance for the pauses, suspensions and changes we are all experiencing during the pandemic.”
The artists are Romi Kim, Marilyn Marshall, Jan Legault and Craig Cochrane. The show ends July 12. You can meet and talk with the artists in an online discussion on Sunday, June 7, 2 to 4 p.m.

More concert simulcasts
The Saturday night Music in The Landing simulcast concerts from the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons continue on June 6 with the old-timey country blues of The Burying Ground. The series then runs for another two weeks with singer-guitarist Joel Fafard on June 13, ending with the Verna Chan Quartet on June 20. The concerts run from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. and are broadcast on Eastlink Community Cable and live-streamed on Music in The Landing’s Facebook page.
