Brian Baxter, Kasia Krolikowska, Carol LaFave, Christina Symons, and Eldon Underhill will present their work at Rockwood Lodge in Sechelt this weekend, from March 21 to 22.
“Our theme is Spring Board,” said Baxter, “allowing us the individual freedom to explore without restrictions — our muses have never had it so good!”
The show begins from 2 to 9 p.m. on Friday (a reception starts at 6 p.m.), then continues on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Recognition for musical high flyers
The Coast Recital Society scholarships recently awarded its 2025 awards to nine young local students to further their study of classical music.
Scholarships were awarded to cellists Salma Atoui, Alina Shao, Miyo Shinagawa and Sebastian Young-Laidlaw; pianists Ally Sato, Gene Sato, and Taho Shinagawa; and violinists Madeleine Malcolmson and Jinny Marshall.
Miyo Shinagawa received the Ross Brougham Award, given for the highest assessment. The award is named after Ross Brougham, a great music lover, who served on the scholarship committee and as treasurer of the Recital Society for many years.
Coast Recital Society scholarships are funded from the sale of CDs at society concerts, and from the proceeds from unused tickets returned for resale. The scholarships applications are accepted in January and February of each year and are open to Sunshine Coast students, 25 years or younger, who are studying classical music (previous recipients are encouraged to apply).

Shakespeare in Sing Sing
The Sunshine Coast Film Society will present the highly acclaimed film Sing Sing at the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse on Monday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. and at the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt on Thursday, April 3 at 2 p.m.
Oscar nominee Colman Domingo leads a superb cast in the movie, including some actors who were former prisoners of the institution. This is the true story of the RTA program: Rehabilitation Through the Arts, which is offered in New York State correctional facilities.
Domingo plays “Divine G,” imprisoned at the storied Sing Sing correctional facility for a crime he says he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group alongside other inmates, including a wary newcomer known as “Divine Eye” (Clarence Maclin). Paul Raci, the character actor from “Sound of Metal” also plays a supporting role as the program’s volunteer director.
For these men, the chance to wear glittering costumes and ride the giddy waves of Shakespeare’s verse promises a few hours of liberation. The movie is a stirring story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art.
Film society membership is required for attendance. Memberships and tickets are available for cash at the door and online at www.scfs.ca (ages 18+). Membership is required to attend society screenings.
