A vigorous live Art Battle raged at The Kube gallery on April 21, as painters Taka Sudo, Sadie Teuf, Ben Tour, Zac Harding and Gidget produced canvases under strict time constraints.
Artists were allotted one hour in each of two rounds. A theme was selected for each round from among four pre-selected themes.
D.J. Dr. Butcher performed music. Canvases were donated by The Painted Lady Art Supplies and Framing of Gibsons.
In Round One (with the theme “People Are Strange”), Sunshine Coast animator Zac Harding was chosen as victor. The 19-year-old Harding, a graduate of Vancouver Film School, was the youngest participant.
In Round Two (“Happy Hour”), Vancouver muralist Taka Sudo took the prize.
All 10 canvases were sold during a silent auction.
Kube co-owners Jill Pilon and Jody Youngren are already planning the next instalment of an anticipated ongoing Art Battle series.
Garage Sale closes up shop this weekend
The lavish production of David King’s Jessie Richardson award-winning stageplay The Garage Sale runs until April 29 at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons.
Standout performances by Larry Musser and Ross McKeachie depict two men struggling with unique torments — one (Billy, played by Musser) chafing at his rootlessness, and the other (Phil, played by McKeachie) craving freedom from suburban domesticity.
The supporting cast, particularly newcomer Sabrina West (who plays Phil’s long-suffering wife Pam), offer spirited performances that illuminate the uniquely modern malaise felt by King’s characters.
The Garage Sale runs on Friday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, April 29 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 pm. Tickets ($20) are available online at heritageplayhouse.com or by cash from Gibsons Florist, MELOmania (Roberts Creek) and Strait Music (Sechelt).
Coastal Lights to shine in mid-May
The Coastal Lights Choir has been working on an appealing and uplifting program of music for its upcoming spring concert.
Under the direction of Kenneth Norman Johnson, the 42-voice choir will sing popular favourites, traditional choral music, and original compositions at an upcoming performance on Wednesday, May 17 at Chatelech School and Thursday, May 18 at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Gibsons. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a 7 p.m. start on both nights.
“I really look forward to our rehearsals on Wednesday evenings,” said Johnson, who recently turned 81. “It has been heartwarming and reassuring to have enthusiasm for choir rebound so resoundingly, post-pandemic. We range in age from 20s to 80s. The shared purpose and connection we feel when singing beautiful music together is one of the most worthwhile things I can think of, for young, old, and in between.”
Tickets are available at Strait Music, from choir members, or at the door.
