With COVID-19 restrictions in place, the annual Community Christmas Dinner will be served up “to go” in two locations this year. On Sunday, Dec. 19, from 4 to 6 p.m., volunteers will be at the Legion Hall in Gibsons and at Holy Family Church Hall in Sechelt, dishing up and packaging traditional turkey dinners “with all the trimmings.” Expect a certain special visitor to hand out gifts to the youngsters, too! The meal is free to all (donations are welcome but not required). Planning to attend? Please text or call 604-865-2011 to let them know how many meals you will be picking up and from which location – and also the age and gender of children who will be receiving a gift from Santa. Persons who are shut-in or self-isolating may request a dinner to be delivered.
Donations of new, unwrapped toys are welcome and may be dropped off at the Salvation Army Sunshine Coast Ministries office at Unit 5, 682 Gibsons Way, open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Hosted by the Coast’s Christian churches working together and supported by Sunshine Coast businesses and service groups, community cinners celebrate Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. These events continue to grow in popularity each year. Thanksgiving’s dinner set a new record for attendance, with more than 650 residents sitting down to dinner together, although separated by necessity (and COVID-19).
