The Arts Council’s annual Literary Readings Series will begin its spring season on Feb. 5 with the distinguished local writer, Andrew Scott. An award-winning author, journalist, editor and photographer, Andrew is also a world traveller, best known locally for his exploration of the remote reaches of B.C.’s south coast. When he moved to Sechelt 25 years ago, Andrew brought his remarkably precise and thorough knowledge to editing and writing for the Encyclopedia of BC and to books such as his Secret Coastline (winner of a BC Book Prize for 2000) and culminating in Encyclopedia of Raincoast Place Names (2009), winner of the Roderick Haig-
Brown BC Book Prize and the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for History.
In his latest book, Under the Bright Sky, A Memoir of Travels Through Asia, Andrew shows the same lively curiosity, sensitivity, and well-informed understanding in his travels through 10 countries over a span of 30 years. He begins by providing the reader with helpful context by sketching an outline of the special connectedness of Asia with our West Coast, and his choice of the memoir form enhances the depth of human perspective in what Wayne Grady calls, “that rare travel book that combines a stunning sense of place and history with sensitive portraits of the people.”
Andrew Scott will read at 7 p.m., Feb. 5. Presented by the Sunshine Coast Arts Council with the sponsorship of the Canada Council. Unfortunately, COVID-19 protocols have again confined us to Zoom presentation at least for the beginning of the season. Register at sunshinecoastartscouncil.com by 4 p.m. Feb. 5.
