The Three Gorges of the Yangtze River is the subject a presentation by Phil Cunnington at the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society meeting on Feb. 7 in Sechelt.

The Three Gorges of the Yangtze River will be the subject an illustrated presentation by Phil Cunnington at the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society meeting on Feb. 7 in Sechelt.

The Yangtze River in China is the longest river in the world that is entirely within one country. As the main marine highway linking the industrial coast at Shanghai to the evolving industrial heartland of western China, the Yangtze River traverses a wide range of terrain.

During his presentation, Cunnington will focus on the popular 160 km portion known as the Three Gorges. Construction of the Three Gorges Dam has had a major impact on the cultural and environmental aspects of this river, primarily upstream of the dam. Some ancient cities are now submerged and new cities have had to be built. The presentation will begin just below the Three Gorges Dam and go upstream to the city of Chongqing, with side excursions up some of the tributary rivers.

During the presentation, Cunnington will share photos showing many different aspects of the river – the land formation, cultural activities, agriculture, wildlife, scenic terrain and glimpses of everyday life.

Cunnington enjoys photography as a hobby, and is active in the Sunshine Coast Camera Club. He lives in Halfmoon Bay.

The meeting will take place in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre at Medusa and Trail. It starts at 7:30 p.m. Coffee and cookies will be served. Visitors welcomed.
