The Sunshine Coast ElderCollege offers a wide range of fall courses for the over 55s: for example, Longevity Cooking the Blue Zone Way, Fisheries and Global Food, Practical Genetics, Adventures in Travel, Access to Fresh Water and more.
The recent Vital Signs report from the Sunshine Coast Foundation tells us that ages 55 and older make up 49 per cent of the coast’s population. This is the age group that SC ElderCollege aims to engage by creating fresh new learning opportunities. “Education isn’t something you can finish,” says Isaac Asimov.
All ages are invited to a special free event titled “Welcome to our Swiya” with hiwus Calvin Craigan, to be held in the shíshálh Nation Longhouse. This event consists of four story telling sessions over two weekends (Aug. 24 and 25, and Sept. 7 and 8): “In the Beginning,” “Interference and Interruption,” “Struggle for Independence” and “Vision for the Future.” Two further free, special events are to be held at the Raven’s Cry Theatre later this fall.
Dr. Alexandra Flynn, Associate Professor at UBC, and Director of the Housing Research Collaborative’s talk is titled “Yes, We Can Fix Canada’s Housing Crisis.” Dr. Flynn will offer practical solutions to both national and local housing concerns, and further discuss the kind of housing needed and where it should be built. (Saturday, Sept. 14). Generously sponsored by Crowe MacKay LLP, Sunshine Coast Accountants.
On Nov. 2, the annual Clifford Smith Memorial Lecture features Howard White, founder of Harbour Publishing which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. His talk is titled “A Thousand Books in Fifty Years: Reflections of a Raincoast Chronicler.” White is the recipient of numerous awards, including an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Victoria and the Order of Canada.
Join us this fall for our special free events or sign up for courses ($40 each). Course registration opens online at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12 at: sunshinecoasteldercollege.ca.
