Summer celebration next Sunday

Next Sunday Aug.

Next Sunday Aug. 21, promises to be an uplifting and fun-filled day as members, volunteers, directors and friends celebrate and reflect on another wonderful year at the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society's annual general meeting and summer celebration.

Slideshows and presentations will highlight achievements of the past five years, and describe exciting new plans for the coming year. Delicious free food and drinks will be served. All community members are warmly invited to join in the celebration, starting at 1 p.m., at the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre.

The event will feature the grand unveiling of the Centre's new Legacy Mosaic. This spectacular stained glass artwork, created by local artist June Malaka, honours the generous contributions of the Lagoon Society's legacy donors. The beautiful mosaic incorporates the donors' names woven throughout the nature-themed design and is housed in a beautiful open-air building generously sponsored by West Coast Log Homes.

Founded in 2002, the goal of the Lagoon Society is to offer facilities for educational programs, research, events and studies; to promote respect for nature, encourage sustainability, and facilitate community participation in environmental stewardship activities; and to assist in monitoring and improving the ecological health of the region.

Since building and opening the Iris Griffith Centre in 2005, the Society has held many workshops, presentations, guided walks and special events on a diversity of topics, from local natural history, to green building design and water conservation strategies, to local art and culture. Hundreds of students from local schools have had opportunities to learn about wildlife and the outdoors through the Centre's nature school program.

Above all, the Centre has provided a place for the community to gather, learn, celebrate, and take a closer look at nature. To learn more, visit www.lagoonsociety.com or call 604-883-9201.
