We’re a month into 2025. So much more awesome is on the way.

First off, Special Olympics Sunshine Coast is gaining a new sport! Invented in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the late ‘60s, floorball is a take off on floor hockey. It’s an indoor sport with a whiffle ball and a floorball stick and protective lenses. Each team has five players on  court and a goalie. The basic rules came round 1979 with the formation of the first club in Sala, Sweden. The official match rules came into being in 1981. Floorball will be on the list for registration in September and will hinge on whether enough athletes, coaches and volunteers show interest so spread the word!

As well as a new sport on the horizon, we are happy to welcome new volunteer, Kat Raaby, to our organization! She has a deep background in sport, dance, gymnastics and even martial arts. This multi-talented individual is looking to lend a hand in whatever way she can. We are delighted you have chosen us, Kat!

Feb. 1, another new collaboration for Special O on the Coast, the local cadets will be hitting the ice with our curling team for a fun bonspiel that is sure to draw a crowd. Come on down to the Gibsons curling rink  where all sweeping and rock throwing fans can cheer them all on!

Look for them all later too at the Gibsons Tim Hortons Donut Day location and be sure to say hi and ask about S.O. Yes, it’s that time again folks, time for some Timmy’s! Tim Hortons and Special O are teaming up once more to promote inclusion through deliciousness. Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, every dollar made from the #choosetoinclude donut goes to fundraise for our wonderful organization across Canada. This great partnership has been going strong since 2016.

Fundraising isn’t just about warm donuts though. Sometimes it involves cold water! Of course I am speaking of the Polar Plunge. SOSC has Feb. 27 as the chilly date, but a venue and most importantly the fundraising element are as yet undetermined. However, have faith my frigid friends, all will work out. Last year’s event was a thorough success and we are sure to do it again!

Finally, the Orca swim team has been invited to a meet on Feb. 9 at the Surrey Sports & Leisure Centre. This will be a great chance for Lindsay, Amber, Stephanie, Hailey and Genny to hone their incredible skills for the provincial games in July. Results will be available in next month’s column.

2025 is just beginning. And we haven’t stopped. LET’S GO!
