Sand castle competition promises lots of fun

Davis Bay

Get some friends and family together to create a sand castle or your own creative sand sculpture.

The sand castle competition in Davis Bay has been happening for 20 years and is a great summer event for all ages. Low tide this year is July 12 and there’s lots of room on the big sand bar. Each group will have 10 feet by 10 feet to work with. Bring your pails, shovels and other tools and practise at low tide.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. next Saturday at the beach area. Sechelt Mayor John Henderson will welcome the community at 10:30, and then building will start.

Participants can register in one of three categories — youth 12 and under, group and family.  Construction will continue until 2 p.m. Judges will be circulating from 1 to 2 and will be  announcing the winners at 2:15.

Then everyone is invited to walk over to the beautiful Mission Point Park to the south of the beach where the Creek Big Band will be set up on the deck and will be ready to play at 2:30 p.m. These talented local musicians will be joined by Davis Bay vocalist Lynne Dickson to provide about two hours of wonderful and varied music.

Teens, as part of the Sechelt Youth Centre’s summer tween community engagement program, will be helping with set up and clean up and selling Freezies.

This program is funded through grants from the Sechelt Community School, the Sunshine Coast Regional District, and the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation.
