Residents invited to pack shoebox gifts

Operation Christmas Child shoebox collection season is under way.

Operation Christmas Child shoebox collection season is under way. Individuals, families, churches, businesses, sports teams, and community groups are now packing shoeboxes with school supplies, hygiene items, and toys plus personal notes, to be delivered to children in need around the world.  Last year the Sunshine Coast residents packed 847 shoeboxes.

“Struggling children and families need hope,” said Kendra Shields, director of Operation Christmas Child. “This is the essence of Operation Christmas Child. Every shoebox gift is an opportunity for a child to learn that he or she matters to Canadians and, most importantly, matters to God. That’s why I want everyone to help as many children in need as possible by packing shoeboxes.”

You can participate in this life changing gift of love to needy children by picking up an empty red and green shoebox at Gibsons Building Supplies (both locations), IGA in Gibsons, Dollar Tree, New Hope Chiropractic in Gibsons and Sechelt and local churches. The local collection centre is Calvary Baptist Church, 711 Park Rd in Gibsons, hours are Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday mornings. You can also call local co-ordinator, Martha Schroth at 604-886-8545 if you need boxes or have any questions.

National Shoebox Collection Week is Nov. 18 to 24: Each gift-filled shoebox packed, donated, and delivered to drop-off location by Nov. 24 will make a long journey into the arms of a child in need.
