The old fellow sitting on a stump at Cedar Grove Elementary School for these many years is seriously deteriorating.
In time past, he lost his hands and his book. Time and the elements have taken a serious toll on the old gnome. Recognizing this, the Elphinstone Com-munity Association has volunteered to do fundraising for a replacement to greet one and all. The gnome has seen hundreds of children come and go, and time has come for another to take up that position.
Carving the creation will be a significant task, which the association has turned over to well-known carver and goldsmith Darcy Gertz of Elphinstone. A huge log now stands in Gertz’s driveway waiting for the first cut. The log, a donation by Terminal Forest Products, was located after significant effort by the crew at the log sort.
The association is looking for any information from the public on the old gnome to put some history together for the scrapbook.
An account under the name of the Gnome Project has been set up with the Sunshine Coast Credit Union should you wish to donate to the project. Should you not want your name on the plaque, just make your donation as anonymous. The association’s goal is to raise $5,000; already it has received $1,200.
