Quilters' Guild presents annual show

The Sunshine Coast Quilters' Guild presents its annual Quilt Show next weekend at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre.

The Sunshine Coast Quilters' Guild presents its annual Quilt Show next weekend at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre.

The Festival of Quilts and Quilting Arts is open to the public Friday through Sunday, May 10 to 12 and features exhibits from the Fibre Arts Network (International Travelling Show), Connected Across the West (Western Canadian members of Studio Art Quilts Associates) Quilters Out of Bounds. There is a merchant mall, boutique, heritage quilts, tea room and quilting in progress. Music from local artists add to the pleasure gained from visiting this wonderful event.

Admission is $5 and the venue is totally wheelchair accessible.

The first meeting of the Guild was held in 1989. It was to serve as an umbrella under which groups of quilters on the Coast could meet and share their knowledge.

The Guild meets at the Holy Family Catholic Church in West Sechelt the last Saturday of each month except December, June, July and August. Affiliated with the Guild is the Comfort Society which donates comfort quilts to the community.

Until 2012 only the New Years' baby at St. Mary's Hospital received a quilt, but this year Guild members have made crib quilts for every baby born at the hospital. Quilts are given to the RCMP, who distribute them to those involved in traffic accidents. Yew Transition House receives quilts which are passed on to those who would benefit from the comfort a quilt can give.

The purpose of the Guild is to promote the art of quilting among all age groups. Workshops have been held promoting quilting among young people within the schools.
