Pender Harbour-Egmont Highlights: Music Society’s ’23-24 season launches

Pender Harbour Days Wooden Boat Festival is under way,  today Friday, Aug. 4 and continues Saturday and Sunday hosted by the Pender Harbour Living Heritage Society at Millennium Park, celebrating the Harbour’s maritime history. Tonight, is the boat parade and a special Coffee House at the School of Music featuring the Pender Harbour Choir with their Songs of Summer. Moored at the dock are the historic working wooden boats from around the B.C. Coast. In the park, tour the historic treasures from the Pender Harbour Living Heritage Society’s collection, interactive displays, talks, films, theatre, vendors, food and seafood draws. Always a favourite attraction, free wooden boat building for the kids. Saturday night, dine and dance at the Legion with Blue Western performing. Sunday morning shop the Marine Tailgate Sale. Buy your lucky raffle tickets to win at the draw Sunday afternoon for a Ken Walters painting and the beautiful handcrafted PHLHS wooden canoe. More fun and games at Harbourside Friendship, Thursday, Aug. 10, 10:30 a.m. at the Hall. Come play Jeopardy Harbourside Friendship Style.  

The Pender Harbour Music Society’s new season 2023-2024 launches with the Mid Summer Chamber Music Weekend. The PHMS continue to present professional live music to the Sunshine Coast community as they have done for over three decades. Tickets are $30 per concert (except for the Music & Laughter Family Concert Saturday, April 20, 2024). Tickets are available on their website and at Harbour Insurance and Strait Music. All concerts begin at 2 p.m. at the School of Music. Saturday, Aug. 12, taking the stage are returning Harbour favourites, Joan Blackman and her musical colleagues Jane Hayes and Julia Nolan. Hannah Addario-Berry and Henry Shapard join them performing Benjamin Britten’s Suite for Solo Cello, and two major piano trios by Shostakovich and Ravel.  

Aug.  13, welcome the Stellar Jays Plus (Joan, Jane, Julia, and Hannah) who promise a relaxed afternoon “Couleurs d’un Rêve” (Colours of a Dream) with a French flavour including compositions by Jean-Luc Defontaine and Claude Debussy. 

The Bargain Barn will host an incredibly special sale, a huge inventory clearance of china, bone, ironstone, pottery of all styles. Aug. 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Aug. 13, 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Find place settings, missing pieces, or that perfect teacup and saucer for a gift. Bargain Barn summer hours are Sundays 12:30 to 3 p.m. for July and August as well as Wednesdays and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Call out for Cars for the 18th Annual Pender Harbour Rotary People’s Choice Show and Shine Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Legion in downtown Madeira Park. All makes and models of cars, trucks, and motorcycles are welcome. Registration is 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Show time 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry fee $25. All proceeds go to Rotary community projects in the Harbour. Multiple awards to be presented.
