Pender Harbour-Egmont Highlights: Dine and dance to Blue Western

And, Wooden Boat Show and August fun a week away

The Sunday Afternoon Dance party at the Legion, 2 to 5 p.m., will have the extremely popular Blue Western returning to the stage. It’s $10 cover at the door. The kitchen will be open, so come dance and dine. While you are there sign up for the Legion’s Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 17, starting at 2 p.m. The playing format is a modified Texas scramble. Entry is $70 per person, which includes golf, appies, dinner and prizes. Everyone will receive a prize! Power carts are not included in the entry fee. Registrations are accepted at the Legion for golf and dinner while power carts must be rented at the golf course. 

Ok folks, August is less than a week away. Time flies when you’re having fun and August in the harbour will be just that. Get out your calendar and make sure you plan to take in the endless events. The Pender Harbour Wooden Boat Show is Aug. 2, 3 and 4 at Millennium Park. The weekend features a variety of heritage boats, exhibits, music and food, starting off with the Friday night boat parade, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, sailboat races, Storytime Theatre by the Driftwood Players, speaker series with presentations from Bill Noon and Howard White, Hard Hat Diving exhibition, face painting with Miss Carla and boat building for the kids. Buy your tickets to win the Blue Heron Canoe, tickets available anytime at the Pender Harbour Living Heritage Society website. Draw will be Sunday, Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. 

Harbour Lights!, Pender Harbour Choir’s show Friday, Aug. 2 launching the Wooden Boat Show weekend is not to be missed. A variety show with acts from comedy, sea shanties, singer mashups, flute, harp, guitar, singers and more! Last year it was a huge sellout success. This is a fundraiser for the choir. Not only will you be entertained, you can also enjoy the talented choir members’ delicious home-made desserts available with beverages for purchase. $10 suggested donation at the door at the School of Music. Doors open at 7 p.m. Music at 7:30 p.m. 

For the coming season, the Pender Harbour Choir has a call out for a rehearsal pianist. Season starts Sept. 10, 7 to 8:30 p.m., select Tuesdays in collaboration with the concert pianist, at the School of Music. This is a paid position with the choir. Gunboat Bay Blues on the Dock, a very special summer concert, once again generously hosted by Ken Mellquist, will be Saturday, Aug. 10, starting at 5 p.m. Enjoy great music while on the water, deck and docks in the bay. 

The Rotary Club of Pender Harbour presents the 19th Annual People’s Choice Show and Shine, Sunday, Aug.  11 at the Royal Canadian Legion in downtown Madeira Park. Entrants display their cars on the grassy apple orchard adjacent to the Legion. All makes and models of cars, trucks, and motorcycles welcome. Registration is 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., showtime 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry fee $30. All proceeds go to Rotary community projects in the Harbour. This is a great family event, come vote for your favorite car and cycle. Multiple awards to be presented. Take in the meat draw in the Legion while you wait for the winners to be announced. Food, fun and 50/50 draw in air-conditioned comfort. 

For the remainder of July and all of August, Pender Harbour Rotary is dedicating the proceeds from the 50-50 draw to benefit the Madeira Park Elementary School Hot Lunch Program. The Pender Harbour Music Society Mid-Summer Chamber Music weekend Aug. 17 and 18 welcomes the return of five internationally outstanding musicians. Kai Gleusteen, violin, and Catherine Ordronneau, piano, Saturday, Aug. 17. This dynamic duo calls Barcelona home. Their programme from Dvorak, Kreisler, and Gershwin promises to be a marvellous opening of the PHMS 2024/2025 concert season. Joan Blackman, violin; Zoltan Rozsnyai, cello; Jane Hayes, piano, Sunday, Aug. 18. Joan and her colleagues are known for superbly expressive ensemble programs and this Sunday afternoon of piano trios promises to be no exception, featuring the Brahms Op. 8 and Babajanian Piano Trio. Dedicated chamber music fans are always delighted at the return of these gifted chamber musicians. Tickets available on the PHMS website.
