Pender Harbour-Egmont Highlights: Concert at School of Music provides soundtrack to an art-full weekend

And some recommendations for the art crawl
Pender Harbour

This is the weekend of glorious sensory overload, art, music, and nature.

In the midst of studio visits, plan to immerse yourself in the magnificent music of Siobhan Walsh, one of Vancouver’s most versatile and authentic young vocalists, Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. Soulful, smooth, her vocal prowess is showcased by a fine six-piece band. Do not miss this outstanding performance at the lovely, heritage building that is home to School of Music in Madeira Park (across from Harbour Gallery). Tickets are available online at Pender Harbour Music Society, website penderharbourmusic.ca, just $30.

Sunshine Coast Art Crawl is under way today Friday, Oct. 18 and carries on through Saturday and Sunday from Langdale to Powell River. Two publications you must have are the Art Map Studio and Gallery Tour Guide and the magnificent Arts, A Major Showcase of Sunshine Coast Arts Volume 1, from the creator, genius Edmund Arceo of Zoom magazine. Arts is a treasure and work of art you will not only enjoy but have as a keepsake in your home library.

There are special places to visit on my favourites list for ‘The Crawl.” CINMAR Studios in Middlepoint is a true gem full of fine jewellery and metal sculptures created by artists Cindy Cantelon and Marshall Mars. Call for appointment 604-741-7640. FYI, Cindy and Marshall were the owners of the much-loved and missed Copper Sky Café and Gallery. Harbour Gallery, across from the School of Music is home to the creations in diverse mediums of our local artists open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flying Anvil is Bruno Pepin’s studio with his fine forged work and famous bells. As well other local artists have their works of art on display. Geopia Gallery and Garden in Earls Cove is breathtaking! A must visit. Call 604-883-2299, cell 604-817-5578.

Explore nature at the Loon Foundation’s 19th Annual Bio Blitz Oct. 19 through Nov 1. Saturday, Oct. 19, the kickoff is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the EarthFair store, where you can pick up a mini calendar and register for free anytime.

Women’s Connection is honoured to present distinguished artist, Hiroshi Shimazaki at their Oct. 22 meeting. Hiroshi studied political science and economics in Japan. He gained a PhD from SFU then on to the University of Lethbridge where he taught cultural geography and international management and remains a professor emeritus. Shimazaki’s love of watercolour painting developed in tandem with his academic interests. “For me, landscape painting elicits appreciation of natural processes, reflection on the historical past, and awareness of the potentialities of human action embodied in each place.”  Come meet this extraordinary man who now calls the Sunshine Coast his home. Doors open at 9:30  a.m. at the School of Music. Drop-in fee of $4, complimentary refreshments included.

The 14th Halloween Howl Dance and Costume Extravaganza will have fantastic music from bluesman extraordinaire Brandon Isaak and the Saints of Swing, Saturday Oct. 26 at the Hall. Prizes for best costumes. Tickets at phblues.ca and at the EarthFair store.
