Forests and water: does logging affect our water supply and risk of floods? The Pender Harbour Wildlife Society is pleased to present Dr. Younes Alila from the UBC Faculty of Forestry.
Dr. Alila has a doctorate in engineering hydrology and has studied the effects of climate and land use change on water resources. Dr. Alila’s innovative research over the last 20 years has challenged the century-old paradigm on how forests affect large floods. Dr. Alila served as an expert witness in three court cases in B.C. that linked severe flooding to forest harvesting.
Dr. Alila’s innovative research has demonstrated a strong link between the proportion of a watershed logged and the risk of flooding. Dr Alila will explain the science and how forest over-harvesting may already be contributing to severe flooding in B.C.
To provide a local perspective of this topic, Suzanne Senger, executive director of the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association, will discuss the SCCA’s ongoing work to protect the forested aquifer recharge areas on Mt Elphinstone South, through the West Howe Sound Watershed Protection Project. Also, Ross Muirhead from Elphinstone Logging Focus will discuss the Elphinstone water protection forest campaign.
