Obituary: Walter Loitz

'He fell in love with the Coast and never went back home to Alberta'

Walter "Walt" Loitz, the second youngest of twelve siblings, born to August and Katharina Loitz on July 25, 1926, passed away peacefully at Christensen Village, Gibsons Landing, BC, on July 14, 2024, at the age of 97 years old. He was surrounded by his loved ones. He was predeceased by his parents, August and Katharina, and his siblings, Lillian, Mary, Minnie, Annie, Henry, John, Fred, Charlie, William, August, And George. He grew up in Lunnford, Alberta, on a family farm. Later in life, he went out to work in many jobs like working on the oil rigs, on the farm, and sawmills company.

One day, he came for a visit to the Sunshine Coast, where his sister Annie lived in West Sechelt. He fell in love with the Coast and never went back home to Alberta. He got a job the next day by working in the logging camp As a Heavy Duty Mechanic, he even worked at the Sechelt Shell station for a short time before renting the Shell gas station at the bottom of Hwy. 101, Redroofs in Halfmoon Bay. Not long after that, when the Standard Oil Gas Station, which is now the "Chevron" at Sunnycrest Mall, came up for lease, he went and looked at it and rented it for 9 years. Then when the gas station at Crucil Rd. came up for sale, he purchased and ran it, and it was named under "Walts Automotive services" till the day it burned down in 1997. His hobbies were Elk and Moose hunting and also fishing. He didn't really retire after all those years; he was in his 80s up to his 90s, and still kept himself busy attending to his garden tilling the soil to get it ready for the planting season, climbing up fruit trees and pruning them, and would always love to go out in the tow trucks to help in the business.

He leaves behind his wife Elsie of 60 years; son Todd (Gloria) Leesie Gan; daughter Sherry (Wayne); grandchildren Gina, Jessica, Axel (Sara), Alvina (William), and Amanda (Vincent); and four of his great-grandchildren, Abigail, Aden, Anson and Viorica.
