It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Walter Kern on December 23, 2024, surrounded by his loving family and friends at his home in Gibsons. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Walter’s kindness, wisdom, and humour left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Born on March 4, 1940, in Vienna, Austria, Walter was the beloved son of Rudolf and Maria Kern. At the age of 14, he immigrated to Canada with his parents and sister Elizabeth, settling in Edmonton, Alberta. It was there that Walter’s strong work ethic, determination, and attention to detail became defining traits that would guide him throughout his life.

In 1963, Walter married the love of his life, Beryl. Their marriage of 61 beautiful years was a true love story filled with laughter, devotion, and countless cherished memories. Together, they created a warm and welcoming home where friends and family gathered, laughter echoed, and stories were shared.

Walter found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He had a passion for fast cars, a knack for fixing things, and a gift for turning their house into a home alongside Beryl. Known for his generosity, Walter was always willing to lend a hand, simply because he could. His annual trips to Palm Springs were a source of happiness, where his infectious smile and welcoming nature drew people to him, just as they did at home.

In the early 1970s, Walter and Beryl moved to the Sunshine Coast, where he began working as an electrician. His entrepreneurial spirit soon led to ventures in TV rentals, a stereo shop, and later, a thriving business at Seaview Plaza offering video rentals, furniture, and appliances. Eventually, Kern’s Plaza became a cornerstone of the Gibsons community, furnishing homes along the coast for over 50 years. Walter and Beryl’s dedication made them beloved figures in the community.

Above all, Walter’s greatest pride was his family. He was a steadfast supporter of Beryl, his children, and his grandchildren. His life exemplified hard work, perseverance, and joy, leaving a legacy of kindness, commitment, and generosity for all who knew him.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible caregivers who supported Walter in his final moments. Dr. Annette McCall, Jovy and Leah of Coast Care, and the Coastal Health palliative care team provided extraordinary care and compassion, for which we are forever thankful. You are all truly angels here on Earth who went above and beyond.

Walter is survived by his beloved wife, Beryl; his children, Rudy Kern (Candice) and Sandy Kern; his grandchildren, Erich (Noelie), Taylor, Katie (Mason), and Madison; and his sister, Elizabeth.

In keeping with Walter’s generous spirit, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Ruby Slipper Fund or the local charity of your choice.

Walter’s celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Walter’s warmth and love will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
