Help clean up the ocean on Sept. 24

Every year thousands of divers and non-divers come together with one common goal: to clean up the world's oceans and waterways.

Every year thousands of divers and non-divers come together with one common goal: to clean up the world's oceans and waterways. More than six million tonnes of debris enter the world's oceans every year, and this doesn't include what's happening in lakes and other waterways.

In 2009, divers had some success in cleaning up the sections of ocean located at the Lighthouse Pub marina and government wharf, emptying a tonne of debris, but the job was not finished. There were still numerous pieces of debris that divers were unable to bring to the surface.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m. volunteers will be meeting in the parking lot of the government wharf at Porpoise Bay, beside the Lighthouse Pub. There will be two dives this year - the first mission is to clean up under the government wharf at Porpoise Bay, the second to clean up under the Lighthouse Marina. Snacks will be provided by Sirens by the Sea Steakhouse between dives, and the Lighthouse Pub will be providing a burger and beer (for those of age) after the event at Buccaneers.

Non-divers are welcome to join, as extra hands will be needed on the surface to help sort the debris that is removed.

The District of Sechelt has volunteered to dispose of the debris collected in an appropriate fashion, and Direct Disposal has offered a recycling container to recycle as much as possible. Free air and half-priced rental gear will be provided by Suncoast Diving for those needing it. Please confirm rental gear by Friday, Sept. 23, with Rob or Sarah at Suncoast Diving.
