Harbour-Egmont Highlights: Pender Harbour celebrates 79th Annual May Day tomorrow

The Pender Harbour May Queen will be crowned at 11:30 a.m.

Welcome to the “Circus,” Pender Harbour’s 79th Annual May Day is this Saturday, May 18. 

Here are the details of this jam-packed exciting day! 

8 a.m. kids (12 and under) fishing derby: Trophies for largest fish, smallest fish, and oddest fish, plus other prizes. At the Madeira Park Government Dock. Fun run: free. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. with the run starting at 8 a.m. Race starts in front of the Oak Tree Market. Lions’ Pancake Breakfast: Pender Harbour Community Hall (until 11 a.m.). 

11 a.m. May Day Parade along Madeira Park Road from Lillies Lake Road to the Madeira Park Elementary School.  

11:30 a.m. Crowning of the May Queen on the Madeira Park Elementary School Field stage. 

Noon to 3-4 p.m. Activities on the Madeira Park Elementary School field include: Classic car display, petting zoo and pony rides, live music, licensed beer garden, food trucks, field events and children’s games: silent auction, bouncy castle, obstacle course, face painting, kids’ games and prizes, dunk tank, popcorn, cotton candy, mini donuts, 50/50 tickets on sale, draw at 3 p.m., vendors: Crafts, food and more. 

9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Adult Dance at the Legion with Brothers in Farms 

Harbour Gallery’s summer show begins this Saturday, during May Day, with all new work. Open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

The Pender Harbour Choir presents “Oldies but Goodies” May 17 at the School of Music 7 p.m. and May 19 at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Gardens at 7 p.m. Tickets $25 from choir members, EarthFair store and at the door. 

Sunday, May 19, the 23rd Attack of Danger Bay world class downhill longboarding is an all day, wildly exciting competition on Beaver Island. Bricin “Striker” Lyons’ commentary is always entertaining. Visit Landyachtz Attack of Danger Bay, an excellent website for a great preview. 

The Pender Harbour Garden Club on May 27 is pleased to host Erin Wilson, the FireSmart representative for the SCRD and lieutenant with the Halfmoon Bay Fire Department. As a deployed firefighter, she has confronted the intensity and unpredictability of wildfires, fostering a deep understanding of their destructive potential. Erin’s professional background in education and forestry enriches her approach to wildfire management. “FireSmart for your Home and Garden” her presentation, will discuss the effective implementation of FireSmart landscaping best practices, emphasizing the utilization of the FireSmart Plant Guide. Pender Harbour School of Music, 1 to 3 p.m., $20 annual membership or $5 drop-in fee, complimentary tea/coffee, and goodies. 

May 28 marks the final regular meeting of the Pender Harbour Women’s Connection for spring 2024. It promises to be a fun filled event with guest performer, Eddy Edrick, well-known local vocalist and instrumentalist. Eddy was born in London UK in 1949. Other boys on his street may have wanted to be a football star but he had his sights set on music. This goal was not immediately reached as he married young and settled into being a father of three while working as a building contractor. Learn the rest of this popular Madeira Park entertainer’s story and enjoy his delightful music.Doors open at 9:30 a.m. Drop-in fee of $4 includes refreshments. Location: School of Music.

May and June’s draw proceeds will go to P.H. Health Centre Renovation Fund. The health centre operates as a not-for-profit relying on grants and donations to purchase much needed medical equipment. They are currently fundraising for P.H. Health Centre Renovation Fund.
