Halfmoon happenings: Fishing derby coming up

Also, Saturday Jam continues at Coopers Green
Halfmoon Bay

Things are starting to pick up on the events side of things in Halfmoon Bay, here are some local events coming up soon.

Travis Campbell, a tugboat captain, is hosting the second annual Coopers Green Fishing Derby on Saturday, March 29, from dawn until 2 p.m. There are prizes including $750 for the largest salmon. Weigh-in at Coopers Green Park at 2 p.m., one fish per entry. There will be additional prizes and a BBQ after. Donations will go to local environment projects, last year the derby was able to raise more than $7,000. Entry fee is $50. Come out to Coopers Green and cheer on the contestants and enjoy the event with your neighbours. Contact Travis at [email protected] with the subject line “Derby 2025” for more information.

The Saturday Bootcamp at Coopers Green Hall with Mary Shaw and Amy Lang is going strong. The Fitness Boot Camp runs on Saturdays from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m., open to all fitness levels. Expect a welcoming and challenging class with professional instruction. Mary has also been hosting Slow Flow Yoga classes down at Coopers Green Hall on Thursdays at 4 p.m. if you are looking for something slower yet energizing. More information is available at movewithmary.ca.

The Saturday Jam continues with organizers wanting to remind locals that this weekly jam is open to all musicians and spectators alike. Organizer Tracy Wandling wrote in a recent post, “We would love to have anyone who enjoys community, and silliness, to come join us. And you don’t have to be a professional musician. Everybody is welcome. Amps are allowed (if needed). Children are welcome. Bring your shakers, your voice, or just your appreciation and enthusiasm.” Come down to Coopers Green Hall on Saturdays from 7 to 9 p.m. to participate.

Drew Temple will be back in town to host another “Journey to the Temple,” a dance and movement focused event at Coopers Green Hall Wednesday, March 19, from 6 and 9 p.m., $40 registration cost. This workshop is one-part hip hop choreography, one-part guided dance journey and friendly for all levels. Email [email protected] to register.

I’d like to express my immense gratitude this week to my fellow Halfmoon Bay Firefighters who joined me this last weekend at the Climb the Wall event at the Sheraton Wall Centre. Our department raised more than $3,500 for the BC Lung Foundation and came away with two of the fastest times on the Coast. We trained hard for the event and I’m so proud of how we represented our district and department. A huge thanks is also owed to everyone who donated and supported us along the way.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any upcoming events to be featured or want to connect about all things happening in Halfmoon Bay. Kyla Trethewey, columnist and Halfmoon Bay Firefighter #36.
