The Halfmoon Bay Hikers are raising money for Sunshine Coast Hospice by dedicating their May hikes to the local hospice.

Have you scrolled through Facebook, community calendars and the Coast Reporter lately?  MAY on the Sunshine Coast is coming in like a lion and I’m not talking about the weather!

Here are a few highlights:

The Halfmoon Bay Hikers remind readers that they are raising money by dedicating their May hikes to Sunshine Coast Hospice. To donate, visit coasthospice.com.

For four Thursdays, the Sunshine Coast Dragon Boat Club invites you to their Introduction to Paddling series at 5:30 p.m. at the Mackenzie Marina in Porpoise Bay.  Cost is $75 (equipment provided) and your fee can be applied to a SCDBC membership.  Visit their website or email [email protected]

May 6 is  Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary Day!  Chat with volunteers at the Sechelt Farmer’s and Artisan’s Market and the Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons, and look for bargains at the thrift shop on Cowrie Street and the gift shop in the Sechelt Hospital.  On May 13, from 9 to 3 p.m., the auxiliary is holding its Bake & Plant Sale at the Trail Bay Mall.  On May 8, at 9:45 a.m. at Coopers Green Hall, the Halfmoon Bay Branch is holding its monthly meeting, featuring RBC speakers who will talk about estate planning, wills etc. Guests are welcome.

On Sunday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden is having a plant sale.  They have lots of great treasures for your home garden. There will be a Bird Walk on May 21 – May is the best month for observing the variety of birds migrating through our area.  For more information, check out their website.

Mary Beth Knechtel, president of the Halfmoon Bay Environmental Society says, “This looks like a good week to scout for Broom in Bloom.”  From May 8 to 13, volunteers will be scouring Redrooffs Road, Welcome Woods, and Secret Cove for these pesky invasives.  Residents are also invited to be on the lookout.  You can contact her at [email protected] for more information.

On May 13, at 9 a.m., the Sargeant Bay Society is holding their annual Birding on the Berm walk.  On May 21, at 9 a.m., participants will learn about botany topics during the annual Botany Walk, this year visiting trails between Trout and Triangle Lakes. Details are available on the SBS website.

On May 28, the Halfmoon Bay Community Association is co-sponsoring, with Pacesetter Athletic and the Sunshine Coast Disc Golf Association, at Connor Park the Pterodactyl Trail Races and Sports Day. It has something for everyone – from a two-kilometre race for the family and younger runners to an eight-kilometre race for more serious runners.  There will be disc golf and ultimate frisbee demo activities, and a “fun zone” for the kids, plus food and beverages from West Coast Nibbles and Semir’s Hot Dog Cart.  For information and race registration, go to the HBCA website.
