Gumboot Nation: Where to find Butta La Pasta, 'Throw the Pasta'

Also, let’s go for funky not junky with roadside chairs at bus stops

Greetings Creekers, this morning I decided to take a walk to wake up. I noticed that the food cupboard is looking bare and that’s something to think about. I also picked up a fair bit of garbage which is another thing to think about, but my walk left me with a “bone to pick” (an English expression used by my mother) with people who leave their cast-off chairs at our bus stops. My walk was a short one but I still passed several bus stops, each of which had one or two chairs, none of which I would consider sitting in. Among the selection there was a split wooden dining chair with a soggy cushion growing green mold, a cracked plastic deck chair covered in mildew and a mesh chair with a big tear in the seat. Really? I can’t understand what makes someone think that putting a wooden dining chair at a bus stop is a fine idea. I know there are people who believe that bus stop chairs are a quaint and funky Roberts Creek tradition. They aren’t. They could become one, though, if people made sure that funky is not junky and choose seats that work for the purpose and the environment and also maintained them. If you are wondering what happens to those junky chairs just look in the bushes behind some of the stops. It’s kind of like dropping off your old refrigerator up B&K Road, just smaller.

In the afternoon, I took another walk, to visit the Hall basement (a dark and dusty place) but lost the key code. Oh well, I was glad I went though, because I got to meet Reno. Reno is a lovely Italian man who was using the Hall kitchen for the first time as he launches his new business, Butta La Pasta, which means Throw the Pasta (in boiling water, not at your mate). He will be using the kitchen every Monday to prepare his frozen ravioli and a variety of fresh pastas. His three ravioli fillings are all made with his homemade ricotta cheese and to go with his pasta. He sells three sauces and three types of focaccia. There will be a grand opening to come but in the meantime, Reno will be selling products for take out every Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. It will be a great addition to the other take out meals available from the Hall kitchen and the frozen entrees available from the Gumboot Restaurant. You might need to plan ahead a bit but there is no need to leave the Creek to find tasty, well-prepared dishes for those times that you don’t want to cook.

Let’s move from food to music.

There is an evening of jazz and improvisation taking place at the Gumboot Cafe tonight (Friday). Modern Art Music features Bruce Freedman, Cesar Chew Aguilera, James Meger and Graham Ord. 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tickets at the door, $10- $20

Here are some upcoming legion events so you can plan ahead:

Tonight at the Legion it’s the Unfaithful Servants, described as one of the most exciting new B.C. bands. They play “New Blue grass” and their debut album earned them a nomination for Folk Music’s New Group of the Year. There might be still time to reserve tickets at robertscreeklegion.com. Along with the music you can eat tacos prepared by Letters of Love catering.

Tomorrow night it’s a DJ night with Coastal Sound Club.

If you are a Hammond organ fan, put Oct.18 on your calendar and grab your dancing shoes for a B3 Hammond Driven Dance Party featuring that music from the ‘70s.

Oct. 19 is for all you punk rockers when Smash TV will visit from Nanaimo along with the Get Mines from Vancouver and local band The Daggers.

Oct. 25, it’s the Interstellar Riders, a surf rock/ rockabilly trio from Vancouver playing original music influenced by bands like Dick Dale and The Ventures.

Then there’s not one but two Halloween events:  On Oct. 26, you can celebrate with Campfire Shitkickers, the Muff Dusters and the Coast’s own Ween Tribute Band, Captain Fantasy. Then on the 31st it’s a Jazzquerade Ball with Groove Syndicate.

There is no Hall dance this Halloween so these are your opportunities to get out a costume and party.

Reservations for all the above are at robertscreeklegion.com

That’s it. Have a great week and please write to me with your events and ideas: [email protected].
