Greetings Creekers!
When I moved to Roberts Creek the post office occupied a small part of the present library building. We had a post mistress who was a stern protector of this federal service and it was not uncommon to walk out chastised for being brave enough to question a procedure. I eventually made use of my cute blonde children and Christmas cookies and a softening occurred. But then we had Cathy and John, who between them made going to pick up the mail a joyful part of the day. Cathy fought hard to save our post office and was instrumental in assuring we kept it. So, today we have our lovely “new” post office where Chris and Linda and their assistants do a wonderful job of offering efficient service in a friendly way that fosters community. Who else would have the patience to deal with me and my parcels to Japan?
In the last couple of weeks some of you received a mail out regarding our postal service. It was brought to my attention by a friend and I would like to bring it to yours. It came from the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association, the union that represents the employees in rural post offices. It points out that this year there will be a review of the Canada Postal Service Charter that will include questioning the value of Canada Post rural post offices, versus private franchises. If you value your rural post office it’s important to respond to this, either by sending in the card attached to the mail out or writing to Helen Jaczek, Minister of Public Services, House of Commons, Ottawa. We love our post office!
If you love jazz too, you will be looking forward to this weekend’s Jazz Festival. There are ticketed events and by-donation afternoon concerts at Hackett Park on Saturday and in Winegarden Park on Sunday as well as live jazz at pubs and cideries. It’s supposed to be sunny so it’s a perfect opportunity to enjoy some great music outdoors. For details on the line up of bands go to www.coastjazz.com.
We all love the Art Crawl but did you know there is a Pottery Crawl? Well, there is and the second annual one coming up on July 8 and 9. and you might want to plan for it. There are many wonderful potters, including several in the Creek who will open their studios for this event. Posters are up and maps should be available soon.
At the Legion this weekend there are not two, but three nights of music. Tonight, the award-winning band Brandon Isaak and the Sunshine Coasters will be playing the blues. On Saturday it’s Bridge, Ocrea and Honeybee.
Sunday night is a special event with Skye Wallace and her band. Skye is a local musician who has been touring Canada and making a name for herself. Dinner is available at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30.
I have often wondered if cats can climb up trees, why can’t they climb down? Maybe they are so shocked that they actually managed it that they freeze? That would happen to me. Anyway, a few days ago a Roberts Creek cat spent upwards of eight hours stuck up a tree. Eventually a neighbour got it down and the cat’s owner would like to thank Brynn for his kindness and bravery. Another reason it’s good to live here!
