Well, that was fun. After last week’s April Fools’ edition, I am hiding out on an undisclosed island in the Salish Sea until things cool down. (Hint, it rhymes with deadpan.) There were a few truths included in that column, but not many! The 219 is indeed hosting Kitty and the Rooster the night this comes out, Friday April 8, and Jam night moved to Tuesday, as well as the existence of Jazz night, but no, Mike doesn’t want to be listening to your bellyaching, as they aren’t even open on Mondays! (Or Sundays.) Saturday the 9th will have Empty Streets and Bigger Bits of String to entertain you, two local acts that will not disappoint.
Ok, so there are construction woes galore, but we won’t be saved by any detours, sorry, and the rest of my April 1st musings were all fibs on the one day it’s OK to spread “fake news.”
My mother’s first language was French and she told me that there was a raven who would perch on the steeple of the church each Sunday as the congregation let out. It did have the ability to swear in French and used it to great effect.
Back to the Legion, many fantastic shows are approaching quickly: Saturday April 16, Mud Bay launches their new release, “Best Laid Plans,” showcasing their rootsy style of R&B. Get limited advance tickets for this and all the shows at the 219 at rclegionevents.com or call (604) 886-9813.
Captain Fantasy roars into the Lil’ Legion a couple weeks down the road on April 23. The tribute to eclectic American Alt-Rock legends Ween has been said to be better than the original! The marathon show this dynamic local four piece puts on will get all your “Ya Ya’s” out, guaranteed.
May doesn’t only bring flowers, it will also bring Georgia Fats to the 219, on May 20. These local legends of music, Barry Taylor on drums, Joel Fafard on slide and vocals, Boyd Norman on bass, will decorate your time with “Dirty, Greasy Blues Gospel.” As a special treat, David Roche will open the show with a set of his inspirational humour. I am giving you plenty of advance notice for this one, it will sell out!
One of the biggest community events of the year in the Gumboot Nation is Earth Day. With the easing of our public health precautions, this year promises to be glorious! The day begins at noon at the mandela (much sooner for the army of volunteers organized by your community association). There will be pierogies (Mamma Musey) Thai food (All Thaied Up), a clothing swap hosted by WolfPup Studios and a day of local music from Monty Montego, Brothers in Farms, SPaDE, Bellows and Strings, to name a few. Look for venders and info booths with an emphasis on how we can live in harmony with the only planet we get. If you want to get in on the volunteer act, message Diana at [email protected].
