Greetings Creekers!

Wow! So many things going on this weekend. Here’s the thing, they are all important and so I advise you to make a plan so you can fit them all in.

First of all, tomorrow (Oct. 19) is election day and if you haven’t already voted at an advance poll, you can head to the Roberts Creek Hall between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. to cast your ballot. This is predicted to be a close election between parties with very different ideologies so please get out and vote. The qualifications to vote are that you must be over 18, a Canadian citizen and have resided in B.C. for the past six months. If you meet these but are concerned about proof, please go to the poll anyway. It is the job of BC Election Officials to look for alternate ways to confirm your eligibility and allow you to cast a ballot. A qualified resident voter may vouch (once only) for an unhoused resident. If you are in that situation, it will be helpful to come with someone who can vouch for you.

Regardless of the importance of politics it’s unlikely to nurture your soul. Art can though and this weekend is your opportunity to immerse yourself in it by getting out on the 2024 Art Crawl. There are more participants than ever this year and you can visit their studios over three days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Seasoned crawlers have their plans, strategies and favourite places but if you are feeling overwhelmed, you could just stick to the Creek where there are 32 places to visit. Maps are available at all Creek businesses and the library. You will be surprised, delighted and inspired by all the different kinds of art and creative activities people are up to.

If you are following the crawl through Sechelt on Saturday, make time to drop in at the Seaside Centre where Creekers Cody and Megan will be putting on their Fall Fair and Baking Contest to raise awareness and money for food security with proceeds going to One Straw.

I think most of us recognize the possibility for disaster on the Sunshine Coast. The thought of a major earthquake or forest fire is overwhelming and we can go into denial or be called to action to get prepared. A committee from the RCCA and OCP group are calling us to action and are presenting an educational workshop on disaster preparation at the Hall this Sunday, Oct. 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. Part 1 will be a presentation by Don Sherwood, who is CEO of “Confidence in Crisis.” Don is a Coast resident who has worldwide experience responding to earthquakes and other events. Part 2 will be a presentation by Nancy Higgins, emergency program coordinator for the SCRD and will include FireSmart, ham radio and first aid information. The focus will be on neighbours helping neighbours and the hope is that out of this workshop will come the motivation to form a group in your neighbourhood.

So, that’s PAD for this weekend, (Politics, Art and Disaster) but what about music??

Tonight (Friday), at the Gumboot Cafe it’s “Birdapres Live“ when underground rapper Neil “Komandi” Frost makes a stop on his Western Canada Tour. 7 p.m. $20

At the Legion tonight, Magic Carpet Ride features some excellent local musicians playing rock, R&B and blues. 8 p.m. $10. Come prepared to dance.

Tomorrow night it’s Smash TV with the Daggers and the Getmines. 8 p.m. $15 You can dance to them too, in a head banging kind of way.

I would like to alert you to an upcoming opportunity to hear the Sunshine Coast Community Orchestra and the Sunshine Coast Concert Band (with youth guests) in the Creek. They will be performing a Halloween concert at the Roberts Creek School gym on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. The repertoire will be appealing to everyone and this is a great opportunity to take your kids to see and hear a live orchestra. Tickets are $15 at the door. Free for children 12 and under. The orchestra and band will be in costume and you are invited to wear one too.

Just before signing off I would like to share some community news. The Roberts Creek General Store is under new ownership. I dropped in to meet the new owners, shook hands, got their names but then walked out the door and promptly forgot them. How embarrassing. Anyway, what I can tell you is that they are a lovely couple from the Creek who have had their eye on the store for some time. It will remain a general store with some changes over the next while. In the meantime, please drop by and congratulate them!

Have a great week and write to me. [email protected].
