Greetings Creekers, well I woke up to a beautiful morning with the sun shining through the yellow maple leaves and so instead of starting this column, I went for a walk. Then I came home and procrastinated and by the time I sat down I had an hour and 15 minutes until deadline and I have just wasted part of that arguing with my computer! Where is my technical advisor when I need him? Anyway, I got it sorted so here we go…
Volunteering seems to be a theme this week and there are ways to do it that can involve as little as a couple of hours in your kitchen to making a potentially life changing commitment. All are good ways to serve your community.
First up, I noticed that the recruitment sign is up at the fire hall. It doesn’t give any information and I think that being unsure about what’s involved can deter people from inquiring but if you really want to make a difference and serve your community there is no better way. Initial training is provided and you are supported by a great team of men and women. After a probationary period, you can become a full-fledged member and one of the team. The training continues as you are always learning new skills, techniques and strategies. As a bonus, you will find yourself making new friends and expanding your social horizons. As the partner of someone who was a volunteer for more than 35 years I speak from direct experience. So don’t be shy about finding out if this would be a good fit for you. Call 604-885-6871 and speak to Chief Pat Higgins.
On Nov. 30, 7:30 p.m. at the Hall there will be elections for the Official Community Plan Committee (OCPC) and candidates are needed. Volunteering for this involves being on an elected board of 11 members who meet monthly to advise our area director and the SCRD on our Official Community Plan. This is another valuable way to volunteer and if you have lived here for one year, you are eligible. Elaine Futterman will be pleased to give you more information at [email protected] or 604-885-2395.
The xwesam Roberts Creek Community Association has a big call out for volunteers for the upcoming annual Christmas Craft Fair on the weekend of Nov. 24 to 26. This great event cannot happen without help from a lot of us and there are several things you can do:
• Help with set up on Nov. 25
• Take one or more shifts at the door or helping in the kitchen
• Contribute baking for the Bake Sale
This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the RCCA and if you are interested in helping contact [email protected].
It will a busy weekend at the Legion. Entertainment includes Bad Tonz and Phantom Limb tonight and The Hook will be playing on Saturday.
But of course the big event is the Remembrance Day Ceremony tomorrow. Please come out and join your neighbours in paying respect to our veterans.
On Sunday at 1 p.m. there will be a celebration of life for Hans. Please bring a finger food to share and stories or photos to help celebrate him.
Don’t forget that next Thursday, the 16th, the Jazz group of 7 will be playing.
For many of these events there will be food available. The Shortcut has taken over the kitchen and will be serving up classic pub food and snacks from Wednesday to Friday starting at 5 p.m. You may know them from their food truck on Henry Road and I have heard great things so check them out!
On the subject of food, I received a note that Perogies Galore will be moving to Wednesdays at the Hall. You can walk in from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or call and order ahead at 604-989-2792.
Yay Creekers! I am finally getting some of you to write to me and I love it. Lots of ideas are coming in for listings in my “Creative Shopping in the Creek” column which I am hoping to do next week or the 24th so get on it! If you have an art or craft that you sell from your home or website, let me know. If you have a service or teach classes that you can offer gift certificates for let me know about that too.
