Well Thanksgiving is behind us and many of us were fortunate enough to share a meal with friends or family. In my case it was both and as we went around the table sharing the things we are thankful for, lots of things came up: bountiful food and the tremendous privilege to be able to choose what we eat; family, friends and community and the good fortune to live in peace. Of course, the horrific situation in Israel and Palestine was very much on our minds. I have a close friend and family friends living in Israel and so there is the additional element of personal worry.
Over the weekend, I took a walk by the library and gazebo area was struck by a couple of things. The first was the amount of litter and cans strewn around the area and the second was a contrast. On one side of the building there were bags and bags of old clothing, mostly broken toys and stained pillows and on the other side was a completely empty food cupboard. Clearly the intention of the people leaving the bags of stuff is that people will go through it and take what they need but I have rarely seen this happen and all it does is get wet, moldy and useless and someone else has to deal with it. The real story is the empty food cupboard. This is what individuals and families in stress need. So, please, instead of leaving bags of junky stuff, do something helpful and leave a can of tuna.
Speaking of being helpful, the Legacy Garden could you use your help this Saturday, Oct.15, when there will be a work party to plant trees and shrubs and do fall garden maintenance. Before that, arborists Cheryl Topping and Andy Sloss will be sharing techniques for planting trees and dividing perennials. That’s at 1 p.m. with the work party from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
If you would like to participate, please email Vicki at [email protected].
So, if you want to get out this weekend you could head to the Legion tonight for the Second Annual John Prine Gala. This is a fundraiser for the Legion, so it’s two things for the price of one: you can be entertained and support this important local venue.
On Saturday night, don’t forget that the Transylvanians will be taking over the Hall for the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tickets are still available for the 9:45 p.m. show and you can get them for $15 at MELOmania, Strait Music and Reasons to Live. $20 at the door.
An event on my list of things to remember is the Art Crawl. It’s coming up next weekend and really, to enjoy it best, you have to get a map and make a plan. Every year I think I am going to do this and every year I set out with no plan and some smart person says, “You mean you didn’t see that?” So do as I say and not as I do and plan ahead. Maps are available at visitor centres, libraries and galleries. I will include more info on the Art Crawl next week.
It’s pouring rain and I am going to put on my big poncho and gumboots and head out. Someone once told me that I looked like a demented nun but I don’t care. Walking in the rain is great. Try it!
Have a good week and write to me [email protected].
