On Saturday, Feb. 4, the Sunshine Coast welcomes Juno Award nominated hip-hop group Sweatshop Union as part of a fundraiser for the Sunshine Coast SPCA.

The event is presented in part by Advocates for the Underdog, a group from Ontario focused on rescue and rehabilitation of abused dogs that works with foster home placement for dogs in B.C., Alberta and Quebec.

Sweatshop Union is a collection of politically minded rap acts. Known for their inventive and socially conscious sound, Sweatshop Union's music focuses on being honest and giving perspective on issues such as the struggles of the working class, the war in the Middle East and the degeneration of mainstream hip-hop music.

Other talented acts include Community Trees, an alternative experimental folk band hailing from Coquitlam, and Crystal Precious, the world's first burlesque hip-hop MC. Pigeon Hole (of Sweatshop Union) and Calgary's DJ DEF3 will be performing an additional set as well. The event will also feature local DJs Jayson Whyte, RobbyLuvdub and Heavy Easy. This will be an evening of excellent musical entertainment.

Presented by Mr. Eddie and VolTor Productions, the event will be held at the Gibsons Legion Hall. Doors open at 8 p.m., show runs until 1 a.m. Tickets are $25, available at Lucy's Clothing in Sechelt, Electric Beach Tanning in Gibsons and Chemistry Clothing in Gibsons. Tickets will also be available at the door for $35, cash only. Donations will be accepted for the SPCA on the night of the show. This is a 19-plus event, no minors.
