First (annual?) Great Sunshine Coast Bake-Off, Fall Fair for Food Security, walk raise $9,000

In the atmospheric rain, Cody Kelso and his mom Megan completed 100,000 steps (yes you read that correctly, roughly 80 km) in just under 19 hours.

Pies, cakes and cookies were among the entrants for the first (possibly annual) Sunshine Coast Bake-Off.

In the atmospheric rain, Cody Kelso and his mom Megan completed 100,000 steps (yes you read that correctly, roughly 80 km) in just under 19 hours. This year’s walk was to benefit One Straw Society in Roberts Creek and though the rain was heavy and feet have blisters, they kept their spirits high and even got in some dancing along the way! After completing the walk just before 5 a.m. Oct. 19, they took a quick two-hour nap in their car before grabbing a bite to eat, some coffee for mom and at 8 a.m. got ready to go for the Fall Fair for Food Security. The event included vendors, silent auction, 50/50 draw and the “Great Sunshine Coast Bake-off.”

The bake-off had three categories with three winners. First was the cake with the most entries. This was won by Janice Morin with her “It” inspired themed cake. She won a three-night stay at Hideaway Creek in Roberts Creek. Next was the Pie Category, won by Caitlin Allenby with her “Lets go to the beach” pie. She won a stay at the Waterfront Stay in Tuwanek. Finally it was the cookies. Arlene Grant won with her classic Shortbread Cookies. She will be staying at the Summit Lodge in Whistler. There was also a teen category and Ora Hunter, whose cake could have been tested against the adults, won with her ginger, hazelnut, chocolate stump cake with mushrooms growing from it (not real of course, but they sure did look it!). She was the lucky winner of $200 in gift cards.

Preliminary numbers are showing approximately $9,000 raised for One Straw Society. Cody and Megan are again amazed and ever so thankful by the response from this community and the question remains, should there be an annual Great Sunshine Coast Bake-off?
