The Sunshine Coast Power and Sail Squadron is reminding the community of safety on the water during Safe Boating Week.

Next week is safe boating awareness week and your wake-up call to ensure that everything is in order on your boat, whether a kayak or cruising power boat.

As well as the safety of you, your family and friends, you could be hit with a $200 fine, plus costs, if RCMP check your boat and you do not have some required safety items or they are not in good working order.

Avoid this situation by getting a free courtesy check from a member of the Sunshine Coast Power & Sail Squadron and get your safety inspection sticker when everything is in good order. If you don’t have everything, the member will explain exactly what you need to save that $200. After recently taking their specialized training in partnership with Transport Canada’s Office of Boating Safety, several squadron members are now volunteering to help ensure that you have an enjoyable and safe summer on the water.

In addition to having the required equipment on board, you also need to have proof of operator competency and operate your boat in a safe manner. The Canadian Boating Safety Council stresses the following points: wear your lifejacket, don’t drink and boat, take a boating skills course, beware of cold water risks and be prepared by making sure your boat is in good mechanical condition and has sufficient fuel.

You can arrange a free courtesy check by contacting Sally at 604-740-5852 or Carole at 604-885-9681.
